Dances

Whether you plan a corporate affair, a fund raiser or a street dance you will have lots of people with very different musical tastes in attendance. You need a band that can play it all and we do. We usually start the dancing with some lighter fare. These songs might include titles only a big band can play well such as “Mack the Knife”, “In The Mood” or “The Way You Look Tonight”. Other tunes that work well here come from the great American songbook. These are the toe- tapper songs to get even the most reluctant dancer out on the floor. We usually do some music trivia here and winners guess song titles to win a big band cd. Then when the party gets going we invite a few guests to come up front and help us out on “Sweet Caroline.” Sometimes we get the men up on “You’ve Lost That Lovin Feeling” and we make them look and sound good. With the younger crowd we have a Michael Jackson dance contest, complete with jacket and glove.

Now your crowd knows we are here to party. As the evening goes on you will hear the coolest versions of Motown songs like you haven’t heard in years. Yes, we play them just like the recordings in the 60′s when they all used a full big band. These tunes include the chart toppers of Aretha Franklin, the Temptations, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson. Beach and shag music fits the bill here too and once again the full horns make beach music come alive. Later, if folks really want to boogie down we can “hit it” with great arrangements from KC & the Sunshine Band, Abba, Michael Jackson, Journey, Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and more. Or we can play upbeat swing or rock and roll. It’s all your choice. Then, just when everyone is out of breath, we lay down the lush ballads that only a great vocalist accompanied by a smooth sax, trombone and trumpet section can deliver. Today, our family enjoyed listening to The Andrew Thielen Big Band Christmas Concert that I recorded live (from your board feed) at the UNCW Kenan Auditorium on December 14, 1996. Jackie Beaumont was the vocalist. Hard to believe I've now played the CD for 22 Christmases since then! Love to you all. ... See MoreSee Less

wow David....that's so nice of you to post this message. You made my day and it's Christmas! Wow...that's about when my band was just starting. I'd love to hear that sometime and if you ever get a chance to send it to me at atbigband@aol.com that would be sensational. I needed some fun news like this today. God bless you David, thanks again and Merry Christmas. 😁

Andrew Thielen Big Band

This video now holds the record for most views in 8 days. 5746 people have viewed this lovely ballad we played in October. A pretty song sung and played wonderfully on a rainy day at the vineyard. Thanks to Donna L Barrow for recording this!
